In science class we cooked with chemistry using acids and bases. Using baking soda (a base) and vinegar (an acid) we baked a Volcano Cake. It's called a Volcano Cake because in a make believe volcano we mix an acid and a base together to create a small eruption. We can see a small eruption in the picture in the upper right hand corner.

First we added the dry ingredients. They were flour, sugar, baking soda, and Hershey's cocoa. Then we made three "craters". We put oil in one, vinegar in another, and vanilla in the third. As we mixed the ingredients together the baking soda and vinegar caused tiny bubbles that released carbon dioxide. As we diluted the mixture with water and mixed all of the ingredients together, most of the action began.
We then popped the cake mixture into the oven. Forty minutes later was the best part, the eating part! To understand science better, have fun with it.
