Is it aluminum or steel?
Slab Lab
In science class we did a slab lab. In the slab lab kit there was a slab and two cubes. We knew that one cube was made of steel and one was made of aluminum, but we didn't know what the slab was made out of. That was what we needed to find out in this lab.
Then the real work began. We measured the volume using a ruler and a calculator, and then again with a graduated cylinder. The cube's volume was 2 cm3 and the slab's volume was 12 cm3. We came to the conclusion that if we took six cubes, whether they were aluminum or steel, they would equal one slab. The aluminum cube's mass was 5.5 grams and the steel cube's mass was 16 grams. The slab's mass was 33 grams.
We took the mass and multiplied it by 6. Remember, 6 cubes equals one slab. Six steel cubes had way more mass (16 x 6 = 96), but the aluminum cube had the exact mass (5.5 x 6 = 33 grams). Therefore, the slab is made out of aluminum!
